OVERVIEW

Naval Medical Center Portsmouth (NMCP) is the U.S. Navy's flagship East Coast tertiary-care medical center, located on the west bank of the Elizabeth River in Portsmouth, Virginia, directly across from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard. The medical center was founded in 1830, making it the first permanent naval hospital in the United States and the oldest still in continuous operation. NMCP supports more than 400,000 enrolled active-duty, retired, and family-member beneficiaries across the Hampton Roads metropolitan area, the largest concentration of U.S. Navy personnel anywhere in the world.

The medical center provides the full range of inpatient and outpatient services found at a major academic medical center, including a verified Level II trauma center, a labor-and-delivery service, a neonatal intensive-care unit, advanced surgical subspecialties, behavioral health, and a comprehensive graduate medical education enterprise. It serves as the principal residency-training site for Navy Medical Corps (2100), Dental Corps (2200), Medical Service Corps (2300), and Nurse Corps (2900) officers on the East Coast, with residency programs spanning internal medicine, family medicine, surgery, OB-GYN, emergency medicine, pediatrics, psychiatry, and many subspecialties. NMCP is also paired with branch health clinics across the Hampton Roads region under Navy Medicine Readiness and Training Command Portsmouth.

HISTORY

Construction of the original Portsmouth Naval Hospital began in 1827 on the site of the former Fort Nelson on the Elizabeth River, and the first patients were admitted in 1830, making it the oldest continuously-operating U.S. Navy hospital. The original Greek Revival hospital building, designed by U.S. Navy architect John Haviland, became one of the most architecturally distinguished medical facilities of the early American republic and treated U.S. Navy and Marine Corps casualties from the Mexican-American War, the U.S. Civil War, the Spanish-American War, and both World Wars.

Through the 19th and 20th centuries the hospital expanded steadily, adding wings and outbuildings to keep pace with the growth of the Hampton Roads naval complex. After World War II the hospital became the principal Navy tertiary referral center for the entire Atlantic Fleet, supporting the rapidly expanding Norfolk Naval Base population. The modern multi-story Charette Health Care Center tower opened in 1960, replacing the historic 1830 hospital as the primary inpatient facility (the original building was preserved as a historic landmark and continues in use for outpatient and administrative functions). In the 21st century, the medical center was reorganized under the Defense Health Agency and renamed Navy Medicine Readiness and Training Command Portsmouth, while continuing to operate the Naval Medical Center as its tertiary-care hospital and graduate medical education site.
