Amtrak Military & Veteran Discount
10% off rail fares (15% in California) for veterans and active-duty military — self-selected at booking.
Amtrak offers a genuine 10% military and veteran discount — 10% off the lowest available rail fare for active-duty service members (plus spouses and dependents) and, separately, for U.S. veterans. There’s no ID.me or GovX gate: you self-select the traveler type when you book ("Military (Active)" or "Military Veteran"), the 10% applies automatically, and you show a valid military or veteran ID when you pick up tickets or board. On select California corridors (Pacific Surfliner, Capitol Corridor, San Joaquins), veterans and active-duty travelers get 15%.
Here’s the honest part: the discount is not combinable and doesn’t apply to Amtrak’s cheapest fares (the old "Saver" fares, now replaced by pop-up flash sales, or weekday Acela). So a public sale fare will often beat 10% off the standard Value fare — you pick whichever is lower, not both. The bigger long-term savings come from the free Amtrak Guest Rewards program and, for pairs, the companion coupon on the Guest Rewards Mastercard.
This is an independent guide — we’re not affiliated with Amtrak, and Amtrak controls the terms and can change them at any time.

WHO QUALIFIES
Amtrak gives active-duty military (plus spouses and dependents) and veterans 10% off the lowest available rail fare — 15% on select California corridors.
- Active-duty military qualify for 10% off (15% on California corridors) with a valid active-duty Armed Forces ID.
- Spouses and dependents of active-duty members qualify for 10% (15% in California) using the service member’s active-duty ID.
- Veterans qualify for 10% (15% in California for veterans and their families) with a valid military veteran ID card — Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, Space Force, and commissioned officers of NOAA Corps, U.S. Public Health Service, and U.S. Merchant Marine.
- Children of active-duty personnel (ages 2–12) get roughly half the adult military fare, then an additional 10%.
- Reserves, National Guard, ROTC, and retirees are not named for the active-duty fare — the children’s discount explicitly excludes them, so verify eligibility directly with Amtrak before booking.

HOW TO REDEEM
Online at www.amtrak.com
- Start a trip searchGo to amtrak.com or open the Amtrak app and begin a trip search in Fare Finder.
- Set the traveler typeFor each qualifying passenger, choose "Military (Active)" for active duty (and spouse/dependent) or "Military Veteran" for veterans. The discount applies automatically to eligible fares.
- Use the California code where applicableOn a California corridor, choose "Adult" and the 15% applies for qualifying routes; in the mobile app, use promo code V780 (active duty) where prompted.
- Compare against a live saleBefore you buy, compare the discounted fare against any public pop-up/flash sale fare — the discount won’t stack, so take whichever total is lower.
In store
- Carry a valid military or veteran IDBring a valid active-duty Armed Forces ID, military veteran ID card, or dependent ID — a conductor or ticket agent may ask to see it at ticketing or onboard.
- Priority ticket lineUniformed active-duty personnel get priority access to the ticket line at staffed stations.
HOW IT WORKS
Amtrak verifies eligibility at the point of travel, not through an online portal. You self-select the military or veteran traveler type at booking; a conductor or ticket agent may ask to see a valid active-duty ID, military veteran ID card, or dependent ID. There is no ID.me, GovX, or SheerID enrollment for this discount. If you’re a WeSalute+ (formerly Veterans Advantage) subscriber, your WeSalute+ Card ID may be accepted as veteran proof — but Amtrak says it can’t guarantee it, so carry a government/military-issued veteran ID as well.
Coupon and affiliate sites float Amtrak "military promo codes" and a standing "20% off" — both misleading. The only Amtrak-issued codes verified here are the California references (V430 veterans, V780 active-duty mobile), not a nationwide coupon. The recurring "20% off" figure is a Veterans Day-only historical promotion, not the year-round rate. Aggregators also list "retired" and "Reserve/ROTC" as broadly eligible — Amtrak’s own children-discount terms explicitly exclude Reserves, ROTC, and retirees.
Because fares are fully dynamic and terms can change, confirm the current offer on Amtrak’s official military and veteran discount pages before you book.
Exclusions & fine print
- Non-combinable — one discount per booking; "may not be combinable with other discount offers."
- Not valid on the lowest promotional fares (legacy Saver / current pop-up flash sales) or on weekday Acela trains.
- Coach and non-Acela Business only — no discount on non-Acela Business, First class, or sleeping accommodation (sleeper upgrade at full cost).
- Not valid for Amtrak Guest Rewards Points or Points & Cash bookings.
- Excludes certain Amtrak Connection/Thruway services and the Canadian portion of Amtrak/VIA Rail Canada joint service.
- California offers carry blackout dates around Thanksgiving and Christmas.
