Holiday Inn and Holiday Inn Express — both IHG brands — offer a real Military Appreciation Rate you can book on ihg.com. IHG publishes a floor of "minimum 5% off the Best Flexible Rate," and the actual discount varies by hotel, date, and availability (many properties run 10–15%). It’s for leisure travel, open to US and Canadian active-duty, veteran, and retired service members plus their family/dependents with valid ID, and you show a military or veteran ID at check-in. There’s also a separate Government Rate for travelers on official government or military orders, priced at or under the federal per-diem cap.

Here’s the honest part: hotel rates don’t stack, and the military rate "cannot be combined with any other offer." Because it’s only a 5% floor, it’s frequently not the cheapest option — the Advance Purchase (Book Early & Save, ~10–15%), AAA, senior, or member rate often wins. So pull up the military rate and the other rates for your hotel and date, and book whichever is lowest. WHO QUALIFIES

• Active-duty military — eligible for the Military Appreciation (leisure) rate with a valid military ID.
• Veterans — eligible with a valid veteran ID.
• Retired military — eligible with valid ID.
• Reserve and National Guard members — covered under active-duty/military ID (verify your ID is accepted at check-in).
• Military spouses, dependents, and family — eligible with a valid dependent ID; the reservation must be in the eligible ID holder’s name and that person must check in themselves.
• Government employees and contractors (federal/state/county/local, CRCs, state universities/healthcare) — eligible for the separate Government Rate on official travel with official ID/orders.
• Not eligible for the leisure military rate: the general public; and note the leisure rate is not available at IHG Army Hotels.

The Military Appreciation Rate is a bookable rate, not a coupon code: you select it at booking and prove eligibility at the front desk. IHG’s own terms state the discount "reflects a range of discounts off the Best Flexible Rate with a minimum discount of 5%," so anything above 5% is set by the individual hotel. It’s open to US and Canadian active duty, veterans, retired military, and family members with valid ID, is for leisure travel only, and requires a military or veteran ID at check-in. Dependents book in their own name and must check in themselves.

The separate Government Rate is for official government/military travel — federal, state, county, and local government employees, military personnel, Defense/Cost-Reimbursable Contractors, and state-funded higher-education and healthcare employees. It’s priced as a percentage off the Best Flex Rate at or under the GSA per-diem cap, and requires an official ID or work orders at check-in. Both the military and government rates earn IHG One Rewards points and neither can be combined with another offer.

This is the travel-loyalty pattern: status stacks, rates don’t. The military, government, AAA, senior, member, and advance-purchase rates are each mutually exclusive — you pick one per booking — but the booking still earns IHG One Rewards points and qualifying nights toward status when you book direct through IHG. Coupon aggregators that advertise a flat "Holiday Inn 15–20% military discount" or a "military promo code" are not stating verified IHG terms; the published floor is 5%, and the discount is a rate you select, not a code you paste.

The practical move: for a leisure stay, pull up the Military Appreciation Rate and the Best Flexible, AAA, senior, member, and Advance Purchase rates for your exact hotel and date, and book the lowest — the 10–15% Advance Purchase rate frequently beats the 5% military floor, though it’s prepaid and non-refundable. On official orders, book the Government Rate to stay within per diem. Keep a free IHG One Rewards account so every stay earns points on top of whatever rate you book.

Exclusions & fine print

• The military leisure rate is for leisure travel only, in the US and Canada, at participating hotels only, and is not available at IHG Army Hotels.
• Cannot be combined with any other offer, discount, or promotion; it has no cash value.
• Blackout dates apply; rooms are limited and subject to availability; certain room types may be excluded.
• Cancellation and deposit follow the individual hotel’s policy — it may be less flexible than the standard Best Flexible Rate; Advance Purchase rates are prepaid and non-refundable.
• The "minimum 5%" is a floor, not a guarantee of a larger discount; the actual amount varies by hotel and date.
• There is no online military code or ID.me/SheerID/GovX gate — eligibility is proven with ID at check-in, and the hotel can deny the discount at the desk if ID can’t be verified.
