Microsoft 365 & Office Military Discount
30% off Microsoft 365 Family via your military Exchange (the only path that discounts the subscription), plus up to 10% off Microsoft Store hardware — which excludes Microsoft 365. The old Home Use Program is retired.
Microsoft offers the military community two separate, officially documented deals — and only one of them discounts your Microsoft 365 subscription. That one is the Microsoft 365 Family "Military Appreciation Edition." Microsoft’s own page advertises it as "Save 30 percent" at $99.99/year, but you buy it from your military Exchange (AAFES, NEX, and others), not through Microsoft.com checkout. Microsoft’s page routes US Army, US Air Force, and US Navy buyers to their Exchange, so this is an Exchange-channel benefit tied to your ability to shop the Exchange — not a code you enter on Microsoft.com.
Separately, the Microsoft Store gives active, former, and retired military — and their families — up to 10% off select products. That 10% is aimed at Surface and other hardware, and per its own terms it does not apply to Microsoft 365 subscriptions, apps, or services. So the 10% will not discount a subscription and does not stack onto the 30% edition.
A heads-up on stale advice: the old Home Use Program is retired. Its replacement, the Workplace Discount Program, is an employer benefit — it needs a participating organization and a work email, so it isn’t a blanket military discount, and a .mil address alone doesn’t qualify. This is an independent guide, not affiliated with Microsoft or AAFES/NEX; Microsoft controls the terms and prices and can change them at any time, so confirm current details before buying.

WHO QUALIFIES
Microsoft offers the military community two separate official deals. The one that actually discounts your Microsoft 365 subscription is the Microsoft 365 Family "Military Appreciation Edition" — "Save 30 percent" at $99.99/year — but you buy it from your military Exchange (AAFES, NEX), not on Microsoft.com. Separately, the Microsoft Store gives active, former, and retired military and their families up to 10% off select products (Surface and other hardware), but that 10% excludes subscriptions, apps, and services, so it does not apply to Microsoft 365.
- Active-duty service members — eligible for both the Exchange 30% Microsoft 365 Family edition and the Microsoft Store up to 10% off select products.
- Reserve and National Guard personnel — named for the Microsoft Store 10% ("Reserve and National Guard military personnel").
- Veterans / former military — eligible for the Store 10%, which covers "active, former, and retired" military; access to the 30% Exchange edition depends on your Exchange shopping privileges.
- Retired military — eligible for both offers, subject to Exchange shopping access for the 30% edition.
- Military families — named for the Store 10%; the Microsoft 365 Family edition is "licensed for families with a qualified military user."
- Employees of participating organizations qualify only through the separate Workplace Discount Program (a work email at a participating org) — that is not a military entitlement, and a .mil address alone does not qualify.
- Students and teachers are not a military path — Microsoft’s separate education pricing is often cheaper than either military offer.

HOW TO REDEEM
Online at www.microsoft.com
- For the subscription: start at Microsoft’s Microsoft 365 military pageGo to microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/military to reach the Microsoft 365 Family "Military Appreciation Edition" (advertised as "Save 30 percent," $99.99/year).
- Select your branch to route to your ExchangeChoose US Army, US Air Force, or US Navy. Microsoft’s page routes each branch to your military Exchange — the purchase happens at the Exchange, not through Microsoft.com checkout.
- Buy the Military Appreciation Edition at your ExchangeComplete the purchase of the Microsoft 365 Family Military Appreciation Edition at your Exchange (~$99.99/yr, 30% off estimated retail). Actual reseller pricing and fulfillment are set by the Exchange — confirm the live price.
- For hardware only: use the Microsoft Store military discountTo save on a Surface, laptop, or tablet, shop microsoft.com/en-us/store/b/military for up to 10% off select products. This 10% does not apply to a Microsoft 365 subscription.
- Confirm the Store 10% with a Microsoft Store agentChat with a Microsoft Store agent (or visit a store) to confirm the military discount is applied to eligible hardware, and review the Student & Military Discount Terms.
In store
- Buy the 30% M365 Family edition at your Exchange in personThe Military Appreciation Edition is sold through the Exchange, so an in-person Exchange purchase (AAFES/NEX) is a valid route. Some shoppers report it occasionally sold as a physical/redeem card — verify current fulfillment at your Exchange.
- Ask a Microsoft Store agent to apply the 10% on hardwareFor Surface/laptop hardware, ask a Microsoft Store agent (online chat or in person) to apply the up to 10% military discount. It does not cover Microsoft 365 subscriptions and can’t be combined with any other offer.
HOW IT WORKS
Which store you buy from decides your price. For the Microsoft 365 subscription, the only military discount is the Family "Military Appreciation Edition," and it lives at the Exchange. Microsoft frames it as 30% off estimated retail at $99.99/year and sends each branch to its Exchange to complete the purchase. Because it’s a separate Exchange SKU, there’s no Microsoft.com coupon to enter and nothing to stack on top.
The Microsoft Store 10% is a different offer for different products. It covers "select products" — Surface, laptops, tablets and other hardware — for active, former, and retired military and their families. Its terms exclude subscriptions, apps, and services, which is why it can’t be used on Microsoft 365, and it "may not be combined with any other offer." Use it for a device, not for the software subscription.
Don’t use the Home Use Program — it’s gone. Forums still circulate advice to "get 30% off Office through the Home Use Program with your .mil email." That’s outdated: HUP was replaced by the Workplace Discount Program, which requires a participating employer’s work email. A plain .mil address does not automatically qualify, so treat "use HUP" as debunked.
If you’re a student or teacher, check Microsoft’s education pricing instead — it’s a separate eligibility that is often far cheaper than either military offer. And around Black Friday or back-to-school, compare public Microsoft Store hardware promos against the 10% military discount, since the 10% can’t be combined with other offers.
Exclusions & fine print
- The Microsoft Store 10% applies to "select products" (hardware); per Microsoft’s terms it EXCLUDES subscriptions, apps, and services — so it does not discount a Microsoft 365 subscription.
- The 10% Store discount "may not be combined with any other offer" — one discount per order, and it does not stack onto the 30% Exchange edition.
- The 30% Microsoft 365 Family "Military Appreciation Edition" is a separate SKU sold through the Exchange; you can’t apply a Microsoft.com code on top, and "actual reseller pricing and savings may vary."
- The Home Use Program (HUP) is retired — do not rely on it. Its successor, the Workplace Discount Program, requires a participating employer and a work email; a .mil address alone does not qualify.
- The exact list of items excluded from the Store 10% (beyond "subscriptions, apps, and services") is set by Microsoft’s Student & Military Discount Terms — confirm specifics there before assuming an item is covered.
- Terms here reflect Microsoft in the United States (APO/FPO delivery supported for Microsoft Store orders). Prices and availability can change at any time.
