American Airlines Military & Veteran Discount
No fare discount — American’s military program is active-duty policy perks: free checked bags, Group 1 boarding, and Admirals Club access in uniform, shown with a military ID at the airport.
Does American Airlines offer a military discount? Not in the form most shoppers expect. American publishes no percentage off its own airfare. Instead, its military program is built on policy perks worth real money for active-duty service members: free checked bags, Group 1 priority boarding, and complimentary Admirals Club access in uniform — all on American-marketed and -operated flights.
Active U.S. military, and their dependents traveling on orders, can check up to 5 bags at 100 lbs each free; active-duty on personal travel get up to 3 bags at 50 lbs each free. You show your military ID at the check-in counter — there’s no code or third-party verification provider for these perks. Active-duty members with ID also board in Group 1, and U.S. military in uniform get complimentary Admirals Club access on a same-day American flight.
This is an independent guide to help you use these benefits. We’re not affiliated with American Airlines, and American controls the terms and can change them at any time. Always confirm details on American’s official military benefits page before you travel.

WHO QUALIFIES
American Airlines doesn’t give military members a percentage off its own airfare. Instead, active-duty service members get policy perks worth real money: free checked bags (up to 5 bags/100 lbs on orders, or up to 3 bags/50 lbs on personal travel), Group 1 priority boarding, and complimentary Admirals Club access in uniform — all on American-marketed and -operated flights.
- Active-duty U.S. military (Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marines, Navy, Space Force; cadets included) get the free checked bags, Group 1 boarding, and in-uniform Admirals Club access by showing a military ID at the airport.
- Dependents traveling on orders qualify for the same bag privileges with a Military Dependent ID plus a copy of active orders.
- American’s definition of "active U.S. military" for the free-bag benefit explicitly excludes Reserves, National Guard, Civilian Military ID holders, and U.S. Public Health Service.
- Veterans and retirees are not listed on American’s official page for the free-bag, boarding, or lounge perks.
- Reserves, National Guard, veterans, retirees, and their families are eligible for the separate WeSalute+ AA Vacations 10% (land portion only, not airfare).

HOW TO REDEEM
Online at www.aa.com
- Know that there’s no online fare discount or codeAmerican publishes no percentage off its own airfare and no military promo code. It mentions "government or military fares in some markets" and directs you to call Reservations — the amount is not published. The core perks (bags, boarding, lounge) are handled at the airport, not online.
- WeSalute+ members: book AA Vacations through WeSaluteIf you subscribe to WeSalute+, log in and open the American Airlines Vacations offer through WeSalute.com’s private booking engine. Book a round-trip package originating from one of the 50 U.S. states; the 10% off the land portion is reflected at checkout. Reaching aavacations.com any other way won’t apply the discount, and changes made by phone reps forfeit it.
In store
- Free checked bags — at the check-in counterBook and travel on an itinerary marketed and operated by American Airlines (not a codeshare partner). At the check-in counter, present your active-duty U.S. military ID (dependents: Military Dependent ID + a copy of active orders). The agent applies your allowance: up to 5 bags/100 lbs each on orders, or up to 3 bags/50 lbs each on personal travel. If you’re on a military fare you can’t pay for bags online — handle bags at the airport.
- Group 1 priority boarding — at the gateAt the gate, show your military ID; active-duty members board with Group 1 (alongside First).
- Admirals Club access — in uniformArrive at an Admirals Club in uniform with your military ID and a same-day boarding pass on an American-operated flight. Access is subject to lounge capacity and excludes the Airspace Lounge (SAN) and JAL Sakura Lounge (HNL). An eligible member may bring immediate family or up to 2 guests.
HOW IT WORKS
The single most important caveat: many aggregator pages advertise "up to 10% off American Airlines flights" for military through WeSalute. That is misleading. WeSalute’s own official offer page states the 10% applies to the land portion of AA Vacations packages — hotels, rental cars, theme parks, and tours — not to airfare. American describes its own military fares only as "government or military fares in some markets," directing you to call Reservations, with no amount published.
Eligibility for the airport perks is narrower than most people assume. American’s definition of eligible "active U.S. military personnel" covers members of the Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marines, Navy, and Space Force in active status (cadets included). It explicitly excludes Civilian Military ID holders, U.S. Public Health Service, Military Reserves, and National Guard for the free-bag benefit, and veterans and retirees are not listed for the bag, boarding, or lounge perks.
For the core perks there is no third-party verification provider and no code — you present your physical military ID at the airport, and dependents also show a Military Dependent ID plus a copy of active orders. The separate WeSalute+ AA Vacations discount requires a paid WeSalute+ subscription that verifies your status and re-bills per WeSalute’s own terms.
American also waives pet charges for trained active-duty military working dogs on official duty with documents (attack-trained dogs must be checked), and accepts checked pets at the ticket counter for active-duty members traveling on assignment, with fees and restrictions. All of these benefits apply on American marketed and operated itineraries, not codeshare flights operated by partner airlines.
Exclusions & fine print
- American publishes no percentage discount on its own airfare; "government or military fares in some markets" requires calling Reservations and the amount is not published.
- The widely repeated "up to 10% off American Airlines flights" claim is misleading — WeSalute’s own page states the 10% applies to the land portion of AA Vacations packages (hotels, cars, theme parks, tours), not airfare.
- Free checked bags apply only on American marketed and operated itineraries — not codeshare flights operated by partner airlines.
- The free-bag benefit’s "active U.S. military" definition excludes Reserves, National Guard, Civilian Military ID holders, and U.S. Public Health Service. Veterans and retirees are not listed for the airport perks.
- On personal/leisure travel the active-duty allowance is 3 bags at 50 lbs, not the 5-bag/100-lb "on orders" allowance.
- WeSalute+ 10% applies to the land portion only, online only through WeSalute’s engine, round-trip, max 9 passengers per reservation, and must originate from a U.S. state; it requires a paid WeSalute+ subscription.
- Admirals Club access is capacity-based and excludes the Airspace Lounge (SAN) and JAL Sakura Lounge (HNL).
- Always confirm current terms on American’s official military benefits page before you travel.

All military & veteran discountsEditorial policy
- Source priority. We cite American’s official military-benefits, checked-baggage, military-bags, and Admirals Club pages first, plus the WeSalute AA Vacations offer page, and report plainly that American publishes no percentage discount on its own airfare. The free-bag, boarding, lounge, and WeSalute+ details are quoted from those primary sources and confirmed on the "Last verified" date above. We deliberately omit the widely repeated "up to 10% off American Airlines flights" claim: WeSalute’s own offer page states the 10% applies to the land portion of AA Vacations packages (hotels, cars, theme parks, tours), not to airfare.
