Alaska Airlines Military & Veteran Discount
Alaska Airlines gives active-duty members a special fare plus free bags, 15% inflight food, and lounge savings — and veterans 5% off fares via WeSalute+. Here’s who gets what and how.
Alaska Airlines runs a "Salute to Service" program built around active-duty travel rather than a single percentage-off code. Active-duty service members and their accompanying spouse and dependent children get a phone-only special military fare, free checked bags (up to 5 on orders), 15% off inflight food, priority boarding, a discounted lounge day pass, and flexible changes when orders disrupt travel.
If you’re a veteran, retiree, or Guard/Reserve member not on active duty, you generally won’t qualify for the active-duty fare or perks. Your main fare-savings path is WeSalute+ (formerly Veterans Advantage), a paid third-party membership that unlocks 5% off Alaska and Hawaiian base fares through a private booking portal.
This is an independent guide. We are not affiliated with Alaska Airlines. Alaska controls all terms and can change them at any time; always confirm current details on Alaska’s official pages before booking.

WHO QUALIFIES
Alaska Airlines’ Salute to Service is benefit-based, built around active-duty travel rather than a flat percentage. Active-duty members and accompanying family get a phone-only special military fare (no published %), up to 5 free checked bags on orders (2 personal), 15% off inflight food, priority boarding, a $35 lounge day pass, and flexible changes on orders. Veterans, retirees, and Guard/Reserve not on active duty get 5% off Alaska/Hawaiian base fares via the paid WeSalute+ membership.
- Active-duty U.S. military (valid military ID) — eligible for all benefits, including the special military fare. Military reserves on active duty are eligible for the special fare.
- Accompanying spouse and dependent children of active duty — eligible for the special fare (with dependent ID/documentation), free bags, and 15% inflight food.
- Recently discharged personnel — eligible for the special fare only if all travel is completed within 7 days of discharge (present separation papers).
- Veterans, retirees, and National Guard/Reserve not on active duty — NOT eligible for the active-duty special fare (retirees are explicitly excluded), but eligible for 5% off base fares via a WeSalute+ membership.
- First responders, medical workers, teachers, government employees, and students are not stated as eligible (no dedicated Alaska discount for these groups). United States carrier.

HOW TO REDEEM
Online at www.alaskaair.com
- No online special military fareAlaska’s active-duty special military fare is available by phone only, through Alaska Airlines or Hawaiian Airlines Reservations — there is no online special military fare.
- WeSalute+ 5% fare (veterans etc.)For the 5% fare discount, enroll in or sign in to WeSalute+ at WeSalute.com, then book your Alaska/Hawaiian flight through WeSalute’s private booking portal; the 5% is applied to eligible base fares (up to 6 people booked together).
In store
- Free checked bags (active duty)At the check-in counter, tell the Alaska agent you’re active-duty (or an accompanying dependent) and present a valid military ID — first 2 bags free for personal travel, up to 5 free when traveling on orders.
- Priority boarding + 15% inflight foodAt the gate, Current Service Members are invited to board early. Onboard, show your military ID to the flight attendant for 15% off food purchases.
- Lounge day passPresent a valid military ID at an Alaska Lounge — complimentary if on SATO government-sponsored travel (flight within 3 hours), otherwise $35 for active duty (vs. the standard $65 single-entry pass).
HOW IT WORKS
There is no online verification portal for Alaska’s active-duty benefits — verification is in person with a valid military ID (airport counter, gate, onboard, lounge) or by phone for the special fare. Dependents 10+ must present a white Uniformed Services Dependent ID marked "active," and additional documentation may be required if a dependent’s name differs from the service member’s. For the pet cargo discount, a common access card and PCS orders within 60 days of report date are required at tender. The WeSalute+ 5% fare is gated by a paid WeSalute+ membership (open to active duty, retirees, Guard, Reserve, veterans, and family) and redeemed through WeSalute’s booking portal, not alaskaair.com — no ID.me, GovX, or SheerID is used.
On amounts: Alaska does not publish a percentage for its active-duty special fare (it’s quoted by phone), so we don’t state one. The clearest quantified benefits are up to 5 free checked bags on orders (often the highest-value perk), 15% off inflight food, a $35 lounge day pass versus the standard $65, and the 5% base-fare discount via WeSalute+. Note a stale figure floating around: a 2024 newsroom post said the lounge pass was $30, but two live Alaska pages show $35 as current.
Watch the exclusions. The active-duty special fare excludes retirees and TDY travel and follows all standard fare rules; the WeSalute 5% excludes Saver fares, select First Class, codeshares, taxes/airport fees, and award travel, can’t be combined with other promotions, and doesn’t serve Prudhoe Bay, AK — though it can apply on top of Alaska’s sale prices. Because WeSalute+ is a paid membership, weigh its cost against your expected savings (it also bundles 1,400+ non-airline offers). For comparison, Delta, United, American, and Southwest also waive checked-bag fees for active-duty on orders, and United and JetBlue likewise offer 5% via WeSalute — so Alaska is competitive but not uniquely generous on fares.
Exclusions & fine print
- The special military fare does not apply to retired personnel or to temporary-duty (TDY) travel. It is new tickets only, phone-booked, with instant ticketing required; standard fare rules and fees apply. Discharged personnel must complete all travel within 7 days of discharge.
- Special fare is valid on flights operated by Alaska, Hawaiian, and (on behalf of Alaska) Horizon and SkyWest.
- WeSalute 5% fare: valid on base-fare levels between all Alaska cities except Prudhoe Bay, AK; only on Alaska-operated and Horizon/SkyWest-on-behalf flights; not valid on codeshares; does not apply to taxes/airport fees; cannot be combined with other promotions or award (Atmos/Mileage Plan) travel; not retroactive; excludes Saver fares and select First Class fares. It can be applied to Alaska’s sale prices.
- WeSalute+ is a paid membership — factor the membership cost against the 5% savings. Lounge day passes are non-refundable and valid only at the location of purchase (with stated exceptions).

- Source priority. We cite Alaska’s own Salute to Service, military-fares, and day-pass pages plus the WeSalute Alaska offer first. Alaska’s active-duty program (special fare, free bags, 15% inflight food, priority boarding, $35 lounge pass, PCS pet cargo) is verified in person with a military ID / by phone for the fare — Alaska publishes NO special-fare percentage, so we assert none. Retirees and TDY travel are excluded from the special fare. Veterans/retirees/Guard/Reserve/family get 5% off base fares only via WeSalute+ (a paid third-party membership), with its own exclusions (Saver fares, select First Class, codeshares, taxes/fees, award travel, Prudhoe Bay AK; not combinable with other promotions). No ID.me/GovX/SheerID. Lounge pass is $35 (current on two live pages; a 2024 newsroom said $30 — stale).
