TurboTax Military & Veteran Discount
TurboTax lets eligible enlisted active-duty and reserve members (E-1–E-9) with a DFAS W-2 file federal and state returns free on TurboTax Online. Here’s who qualifies and how to verify.
TurboTax offers free federal and state tax filing for eligible enlisted active-duty and reserve service members. If your rank is E-1 through E-9 and you have a W-2 from DFAS, you can file both returns for $0 using TurboTax Online’s Free Edition, Deluxe, or Premium products. There’s no coupon code to hunt for — you enter your military W-2, verify your rank when prompted, and the discount is applied when you’re ready to file.
The offer is limited to enlisted ranks. According to TurboTax’s official military page, commissioned officers, warrant officers, veterans, retirees, and National Guard members do not qualify, and the discount does not apply to TurboTax Experts (expert-assisted), TurboTax Desktop, or add-on bundles. A military spouse can be included on a joint return even if the spouse is not in the military.
This is an independent guide. NavyWeek is not affiliated with TurboTax or Intuit. TurboTax controls the offer and its terms and can change them at any time — always confirm details on TurboTax’s official military page before filing.

WHO QUALIFIES
Eligible enlisted active-duty and reserve service members (ranks E-1–E-9) with a W-2 from DFAS file both federal and state returns for $0 on TurboTax Online (Free Edition, Deluxe, or Premium). No promo code — you enter your DFAS W-2 and verify your rank in-product. Officers, warrant officers, veterans, retirees, and National Guard are not eligible; the discount does not apply to TurboTax Desktop or TurboTax Experts.
- Enlisted active-duty service members, ranks E-1 through E-9, with a W-2 from DFAS — eligible.
- Enlisted reservists, ranks E-1 through E-9, with a DFAS W-2 — eligible. (Note: National Guard is a distinct case — see below.)
- A military spouse can be included on the eligible member’s joint return even if the spouse is not in the military, but the spouse does not qualify independently.
- NOT eligible per the official military-edition page: commissioned officers, warrant officers, veterans (no longer on active duty), and retirees.
- National Guard: the official military-edition page states Guard members do NOT qualify. A separate TurboTax blog quote lists "National Guard E-1–E-9" as eligible under qualifying active reserve orders through DFAS — this conflict is unresolved, so we follow the authoritative page (excluded) and recommend confirming in-product.
- No first-responder, nurse, teacher, government, or student discount is offered. United States (DFAS W-2). Dependents and surviving-spouse/Gold Star eligibility are not stated.

HOW TO REDEEM
Online at turbotax.intuit.com
- Start a return on TurboTax OnlineGo to turbotax.intuit.com and start a return using a standard Online product (Free Edition, Deluxe, or Premium). Do not use TurboTax Desktop or a TurboTax Experts/Live product — the discount does not apply there.
- Enter your DFAS military W-2Enter your W-2 from DFAS when prompted during your return.
- Verify your rank (E-1–E-9)Confirm your military status and pay grade (E-1–E-9) when prompted.
- Discount applies at filingTurboTax detects eligibility and automatically reduces your cost to $0 for both federal and state returns. There is no promo code, and the discount shows up when you’re ready to file — not in the prices listed beforehand.
In store
- Not applicable — online onlyThere is no in-store military discount. The offer is for TurboTax Online only; TurboTax Desktop (CD/download) products and in-person TurboTax expert offices are excluded.
HOW IT WORKS
Verification happens inside the TurboTax Online product while you prepare your return — there is no separate signup with a third-party verifier like ID.me, SheerID, or GovX, and no promo code. You enter your DFAS-issued military W-2 and confirm your rank/pay grade (E-1–E-9); TurboTax applies the discount automatically at filing. An account is required. The official source does not state a re-verification cadence; in practice you verify each tax year when you file. If the discount doesn’t apply, the likely cause is rank/product ineligibility (officer, warrant officer, Guard, or use of Desktop/Experts) — contact TurboTax Support.
The scope is narrow and worth repeating: enlisted E-1–E-9 only, on TurboTax Online only. Unlike some offers, this makes your military state taxes free too, not just federal. But it does not extend to officers, warrant officers, veterans, retirees, or (per the official page) National Guard, and it will not apply if you start in TurboTax Desktop or a TurboTax Experts/Live product — a common reason the discount fails to appear.
If you don’t qualify here, two other free routes exist for a broader military audience: MilTax, the Department of Defense’s free tax software and support via Military OneSource (militaryonesource.mil), and IRS Free File for taxpayers under an income threshold (irs.gov). Confirm current eligibility on those official sites. Comparing H&R Block and TaxSlayer’s own military offers is also worthwhile before you file.
Exclusions & fine print
- Enlisted only: valid for active duty and reservists of an enlisted rank E-1 through E-9 with a DFAS W-2. Not valid for commissioned officers or warrant officers.
- Excludes National Guard members (per the military-edition page; a blog statement conflicts — treat the official page as authoritative and confirm in-product). Also excludes veterans and retirees.
- TurboTax Online products only (Free Edition, Deluxe, Premium). Not valid for TurboTax Experts (Live/expert-assisted) or TurboTax Desktop, and no discount on add-on bundles such as TurboTax PLUS or MAX.
- Discounts are not reflected in prices shown before filing and apply when you file; generally not combinable with other TurboTax offers. Intuit reserves the right to modify or terminate any offer at any time. Per-account/return caps, dependent, and surviving-spouse rules are not stated in the official source. United States.

- Source priority. We cite TurboTax’s own military-edition page first, plus the Intuit TurboTax blog. The $0 federal+state, enlisted E-1–E-9 scope, and exclusions are from the official page. On National Guard the official page says "Excludes National Guard members" while a blog quote lists "Guard E-1–E-9" as eligible — we treat the official page as authoritative (excluded) and flag the conflict; confirm in-product each tax year. Spouses may join a member’s joint return but don’t qualify independently. Per-account caps, dependent, and surviving-spouse rules are not stated. Confirm current terms on the "Last verified" date above.
- Independence. NavyWeek.org is not affiliated with the U.S. Navy, the Department of Defense, NAVCO, or any federal agency. We do not accept payment to recommend specific recruiters, schools, vendors, or services.
- Review cadence. Because TurboTax can change these terms at any time, the offer is re-verified against the official page on a recurring basis and whenever a reader reports a change.
- Reviewer. The page is reviewed for accuracy by the reviewer named in the byline. The "Last reviewed" date at the top of the page reflects the most recent review pass.
