PenFed Credit Cards: Military Benefits & the Honors Advantage Fee Waiver
PenFed has no coupon-style military discount — and anyone can join. The military benefit is Honors Advantage: the Pathfinder’s $95 annual fee waived, 4X travel/3X dining, and a flat 2% on Power Cash — automatic for active duty, Guard, Reserve, honorably discharged veterans, and retirees, for life. Here’s who gets what, the checking-account route for everyone else, and how PenFed’s 6% SCRA cap compares to Navy Federal’s 4%.
PenFed — Pentagon Federal Credit Union — doesn’t have a "military discount," and despite the name it isn’t military-only: anyone in the U.S. has been able to join since its January 1, 2019 merger with Progressive Credit Union created an open charter. What PenFed does have is Honors Advantage, a membership program that gives the military community better card terms automatically: the $95 annual fee waived on its Pathfinder Rewards travel card, 4X points on travel and 3X on dining instead of 3X/2X, and a flat 2% cash back on the Power Cash card instead of 1.5%.
Here’s what makes PenFed different from the statutory fee waivers at Amex or Chase: those depend on federal law (SCRA/MLA) and end when active duty ends. Honors Advantage covers active duty, Guard, Reserve, honorably discharged veterans, and military retirees — for life — because it’s a program PenFed created, not a legal obligation. Military spouses aren’t listed in the military route, but they (like any civilian) can get identical terms by holding a qualifying PenFed checking account.
This is an independent guide. NavyWeek is not affiliated with PenFed, which controls Honors Advantage and all card terms and can change them at any time; PenFed is federally insured by the NCUA, and nothing here is financial advice or a credit offer.

Veterans and retirees: this is the fee-waived card the statutory waivers won’t give you.
Amex and Chase fee waivers run on federal law (SCRA/MLA) and end when active duty ends. PenFed’s Honors Advantage is a membership perk — so honorably discharged veterans and military retirees keep the $95-fee-waived Pathfinder, 4X/3X earning, and the flat-2% Power Cash for life, automatically.
- Join PenFed (open to everyone) or apply directly for the Pathfinder or Power Cash card — membership is created during the application.
- Your military status — active duty, Guard/Reserve, honorably discharged veteran, or retiree — triggers Honors Advantage at application: $95 Pathfinder fee waived, 4X travel/3X dining, Power Cash at a flat 2%.
- Currently active duty? Hold both ecosystems: MLA $0-fee premium cards at Amex/Chase for the big waivers while you serve, and PenFed’s boosted cards as the keepers that stay upgraded after you separate.
PenFed controls Honors Advantage and can change its terms; rates are PenFed’s published figures as of July 2026. Worth ~$195/yr on our baseline before counting travel-earn upgrades.
BEST SAVINGS PATH
The smartest route depends on your situation. Answer the two questions to find your best path, or scan the full decision table below.
Find your best path
1. Are you active duty, Guard/Reserve, an honorably discharged veteran, or retired from military service?
2. Would you keep a qualifying PenFed checking account (Access America, or Free Checking with a $500 balance or $500+ monthly direct deposit)?
Any qualifying military status — active duty, Guard/Reserve, honorably discharged veteran, or military retiree — gets Honors Advantage automatically: the Pathfinder’s $95 fee waived, 4X travel/3X dining, and a flat 2% on Power Cash, for life. No military status? A qualifying PenFed checking account unlocks identical terms.
Your service status qualifies you at application with no maintenance condition — the checking account adds nothing extra on the cards.
No checking account required: $95 Pathfinder fee waived, 4X/3X earning, and a flat 2% on Power Cash, for life.
Identical card terms for civilians and military spouses — just keep the qualifying checking account, or the waiver ends with advance notice.
Anyone can still join: Pathfinder at $95/yr with 3X/2X, Power Cash at 1.5%, 17.99% variable APR, and no foreign transaction fees.
| Path | Stack | Effective price | You save | Best when |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Honors Advantage — military route (automatic) | Pathfinder fee $0 + 4X travel/3X dining + Power Cash flat 2%; stacks with welcome bonuses | $0 annual fee + 2% on all Power Cash spend | ~$195/yr ($95 fee + $100 extra cash back) — for life | You’re active duty, Guard/Reserve, an honorably discharged veteran, or a military retiree — no checking account needed. |
| Honors Advantage — checking route (anyone) | Same benefits via Access America Checking, or Free Checking with $500 balance / $500+ monthly direct deposit | $0 annual fee + 2% on all Power Cash spend | Same ~$195/yr, with a maintenance condition | You’re a civilian or a military spouse (the military route doesn’t list spouses) who wants the same card terms. |
| SCRA relief (request required) | 6% interest cap + no late/over-limit fees on accounts opened before active duty | Interest capped at 6% on pre-service balances | Interest above 6% + fees, for the duration of active duty | You’re activated Guard/Reserve or new active duty with pre-service PenFed debt — file within 180 days of leaving active duty. |
| No military status, no checking | Standard member terms | Pathfinder $95/yr at 3X/2X; Power Cash 1.5% | $0 | N/A — still $0-fee card options, 17.99% variable APR, and no foreign transaction fees on all four cards. |
| Cross-shop: Amex/Chase premium cards under MLA | $0 annual fee on premium cards opened while on active duty (e.g. $895 Amex Platinum) | $0 on far larger annual fees | Bigger fee waivers than PenFed’s $95 — while you serve | You’re currently active duty — statutory MLA waivers on true premium cards beat PenFed’s lineup on raw value; hold both. |
| Cross-shop: Navy Federal | No-annual-fee cards + 4% SCRA cap (vs PenFed’s statutory 6%) | Pre-service balances capped at 4% | Extra 2 points of interest on pre-service debt | Your priority is the deepest SCRA treatment or the NFCU ecosystem, and you’re NFCU-eligible. |
WHO QUALIFIES
PenFed has no coupon-style military discount — and despite the name, anyone can join (open charter since its January 1, 2019 merger with Progressive Credit Union). The military benefit is Honors Advantage, a membership program on two cards: it waives the Pathfinder Rewards Visa Signature’s $95 annual fee, boosts Pathfinder earning to 4X on travel and 3X on dining (vs 3X/2X), and bumps the $0-fee Power Cash card to a flat 2% cash back (vs 1.5%). It applies automatically to active duty, Guard, Reserve, honorably discharged veterans, and military retirees — for life, because it’s a membership perk, not an SCRA/MLA legal requirement that ends with active duty. Civilians (and military spouses, who aren’t listed in the military route) get identical terms by holding a qualifying PenFed checking account. PenFed verifies status in its own application flow — no ID.me, SheerID, or GovX.
- Active-duty servicemembers — Honors Advantage applies automatically ("in an active military service status"); SCRA (6% rate cap, no late or over-limit fees) is separately available on PenFed accounts opened before active duty.
- Reserve and National Guard members — Honors Advantage applies automatically; the published terms do not require activation.
- Honorably discharged veterans — Honors Advantage applies automatically, for life. This is PenFed’s signature edge: statutory SCRA/MLA fee waivers at other issuers end when active duty ends and exclude veterans.
- Military retirees ("retired from such service") — Honors Advantage applies automatically, for life.
- Military spouses and dependents — NOT listed in the published military-route language; they qualify instead through the checking-account route, same as civilians.
- Civilians — PenFed membership is open to everyone ("Everyone is eligible to apply"); Honors Advantage is earned by being primary owner of a qualifying PenFed checking account: Access America Checking, or Free Checking with a $500 minimum daily balance or $500+ in monthly direct deposits.

HOW TO REDEEM
Online at www.penfed.org
- Join PenFed — open to everyoneOpen a share savings account in the online join flow at penfed.org (a small opening deposit is required; PenFed doesn’t publish the exact amount on its marketing pages). You can also start a card application as a non-member — PenFed creates the membership during the process.
- Apply for a Pathfinder or Power Cash cardThese are the only two cards Honors Advantage touches: Pathfinder (travel, $95 fee, 50,000-point bonus for $3,000 spend in the first 90 days) or Power Cash ($0 fee, flat cash back, $100 statement-credit bonus — check PenFed’s current offer for the exact spend requirement).
- Qualify for Honors AdvantageMilitary status — active duty, Guard/Reserve, honorably discharged veteran, or military retiree — qualifies you automatically at application, with nothing else to do. Otherwise, be (or become) the primary owner of a qualifying PenFed checking account.
- The fee waiver and rate boosts applyQualify at application and the Pathfinder’s $95 annual fee is waived immediately; qualify later and it’s waived at your next account anniversary. The 4X travel/3X dining and 2% Power Cash rates come with it.
- SCRA (separate, pre-service accounts only)If you opened PenFed accounts before going on active duty, request SCRA relief: upload your activation orders to PenFed.org/secureupload during active duty or within 180 days after your last day of active service.
HOW IT WORKS
Honors Advantage has two routes. The military route is automatic and covers anyone "in an active military service status, a member of the Reserves or National Guard, an honorably discharged U.S. Military Veteran or retired from such service" — no checking account needed, no maintenance condition, ever. The civilian route requires being primary owner of both the credit card and a qualifying PenFed checking account: Access America Checking, or Free Checking with a $500 minimum daily balance or $500 or more in monthly direct deposits (PenCheck Limited doesn’t count). Timing matters: qualify at application and the Pathfinder’s $95 fee is waived immediately; qualify later and it’s waived at your next anniversary; stop qualifying (checking route) and the waiver ends with advance notice. On our baseline — one Pathfinder plus $20,000 a year of everyday spend on Power Cash — the program is worth roughly $195 a year ($95 fee waived plus $100 in extra cash back from the 2%-vs-1.5% bump), before counting the richer 4X/3X travel earning.
The card lineup, for context: the Pathfinder Rewards Visa Signature ($95, waived with Honors Advantage) earns 4X travel/3X dining for Honors Advantage members and 1.5X on everything else, with a 50,000-point welcome bonus for $3,000 spend in the first 90 days (PenFed values it at up to $500; points redeem at a minimum of $0.0085 and up to $0.01), a $100-a-year domestic air ancillary credit, a $120 Global Entry or $85 TSA PreCheck credit every 4 years, and complimentary Priority Pass Select membership plus a guest (a $99 value — lounge visit fees apply). Power Cash is the $0-fee flat-rate card: 2% for Honors Advantage members, 1.5% otherwise, no caps, with a $100 statement-credit welcome bonus (check PenFed’s current terms for the exact spend requirement). The other two cards — Platinum Rewards (5X gas at the pump and EV charging, 3X supermarkets, 15,000-point bonus for $1,500 in 90 days) and the Gold Visa (no rewards; 0% intro purchase APR for 15 months, then 17.99% variable) — get no Honors Advantage benefit at all. All four cards carry the same 17.99% variable purchase APR (as of July 2026) and no foreign transaction fees.
SCRA is a separate, statutory benefit and it’s worth being precise about: for PenFed accounts opened before you went on active duty, PenFed caps interest at 6% and charges no late or over-limit fees, effective from your active-duty start date. You must request it — upload activation orders to PenFed.org/secureupload during active duty or within 180 days after your last day of active service. Note the comparison: Navy Federal voluntarily caps SCRA-eligible balances at 4%; PenFed publishes the statutory 6%. PenFed publishes no MLA fee policy for accounts opened during active duty — largely moot here, since active-duty members already get the lineup’s only annual fee waived through Honors Advantage. If you’re currently serving, the highest-value play is to hold both ecosystems: Honors Advantage at PenFed for the 2%/4X boosts that survive your separation, and MLA $0-annual-fee premium cards (like an $895 Amex Platinum) at issuers where federal law waives far bigger fees while you serve.
Three myths to close out. First, there is no PenFed promo code or percent-off military discount — coupon-site "PenFed military codes" are fabricated, because there’s no code field anywhere in PenFed’s card products. Second, "PenFed is military-only" is false — membership has been open to everyone since January 1, 2019; the military angle is the Honors Advantage rate and fee treatment, not the membership door. Third, don’t credit PenFed with the 4% SCRA cap some pages attribute to military issuers generally — PenFed’s published SCRA benefit is the statutory 6% plus waived late and over-limit fees; it’s Navy Federal that voluntarily goes to 4%.
Exclusions & fine print
- Honors Advantage boosts only the Pathfinder and Power Cash cards — Platinum Rewards and the Gold Visa get nothing from military status (PenFed’s comparison table marks both "Honor Advantage Member Benefits: No").
- The military route requires an honorable discharge for veterans — the published terms cover an "honorably discharged U.S. Military Veteran or retired from such service."
- Spouses and dependents are not listed in the published military-route language — they must use the checking-account route.
- The checking-route waiver is conditional and revocable: fail to maintain the qualifying account (for Free Checking, the $500 minimum daily balance or $500+/month direct deposit) and PenFed ends the waiver with advance notice. Military-route qualifiers have no condition to lose.
- Pathfinder and Platinum Rewards points expire after 5 years; Power Cash rewards don’t expire while the account is open.
- Priority Pass Select membership on the Pathfinder is complimentary, but lounge visit fees apply; the Global Entry ($120) / TSA PreCheck ($85) statement credit recurs every 4 years, not annually.
- SCRA covers accounts opened before active duty only, must be requested with orders, and PenFed’s published cap is the statutory 6% — not the 4% some issuers (like Navy Federal) voluntarily offer.
- No promo-code layer exists — PenFed card products have no code field, so nothing external stacks; any coupon-site "PenFed military code" is fabricated.
- Rates and offers are PenFed’s published figures "current as of July 2026 and subject to change."

Editorial policy
- Source priority. We cite PenFed’s own card pages first — the Pathfinder page ($95 fee and waiver terms, 4X/3X vs 3X/2X rates, travel credits), the compare-credit-cards page (the Honors Advantage qualification footnote and the "Honor Advantage Member Benefits" rows), the Power Cash Rewards Terms & Conditions PDF (the written 2%-vs-1.5% rule), and PenFed’s help-center SCRA article — plus Navy Federal’s SCRA page for the 6%-vs-4% comparison. PenFed verifies eligibility inside its own membership and card applications, so there is no third-party verification page to cite. We report plainly that no PenFed promo code or percent-off military discount exists — coupon-site "PenFed military codes" are fabricated, because PenFed’s card products have no promo-code field. All figures are PenFed’s published rates "current as of July 2026," confirmed on the "Last verified" date above.
