Good news up front: the Bronx Zoo, run by the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), has one of the best military and veteran discounts of any US zoo. Active-duty military and veterans get a free admission ticket for themselves — either the full “Bronx Zoo Admission” (Total Experience) or basic “Limited Admission” — plus 50% off tickets for up to 3 guests. You claim it with a promo code at checkout (MILITARYBZ for active duty, VETERANBZ for veterans) and show your military ID at the gate.

Ignore the coupon sites that headline a flat “50% off” — that undersells it in one way (your own ticket is free) and oversells it in another (only up to 3 guests get the half-price rate). For a family of four, the official code takes a roughly $133 cart down to about $47. The only thing that can beat it is the zoo’s free Limited Admission every Wednesday, which is open to everyone.

WHO QUALIFIES

• Active-duty US military — free member ticket plus 50% off for up to 3 guests, using promo code MILITARYBZ, with a valid military ID at the gate.
• Veterans — the same free + 50%-off-3-guests structure, using promo code VETERANBZ.
• Reserve and National Guard members — covered under WCS’s “active US Military” wording; bring valid ID at entry.
• Military spouses and dependents — NOT free; they get the 50% only, and only with an “Active Dependent Card” when the service member is absent (codes MILITARYBZDEP / VETERANBZDEP).
• Military retirees and Gold Star / surviving family are not addressed in the official source — contact the zoo before relying on the discount.
• First responders, teachers, and nurses have no dedicated program in the official source; NYC undergraduates separately get free Limited Admission with a NYC college ID (walk-up).

HOW TO REDEEM

HOW IT WORKS

There is no third-party verification service here — no ID.me, SheerID, GovX, or WeSalute. WCS self-verifies: you enter the promo code when booking, and staff check your military ID at the entrance. The four codes are MILITARYBZ (active duty), VETERANBZ (veteran), and MILITARYBZDEP / VETERANBZDEP for dependents using the discount without the member present, which requires an Active Dependent Card. Because it’s ID-at-the-gate, the reservation alone isn’t proof — keep your credential on you.

The structure is member-free plus 50% off up to 3 guests, and it can’t be stacked with any other discount or promotion. On the baseline military family of four (1 active-duty member + spouse + 2 children 3–12) buying Bronx Zoo Admission, the full-price base flex cart is about $132.80; the code drops it to roughly $47.30 — the member free, three guests at half price. It’s the best deal every day except Wednesday, when basic Limited Admission is already free for everyone (reservations open Mondays at 5pm).

One caveat worth knowing: an older WCS press release said the military discount was “on-site only,” but the current bronxzoo.com FAQ supersedes it, providing the promo codes explicitly for advance online reservations. WCS also is not a documented Blue Star Museums participant and doesn’t mention the program — it runs its own year-round military discount instead. Bronx Zoo Admission uses flex pricing, so the base rate climbs on peak dates; the military math still holds (member always free, guests always 50%), but the dollar figures move.

Exclusions & fine print

• Only the member’s own ticket is free; the 50% applies to up to 3 guests — additional guests pay full price.
• Cannot be combined with any other discount or promotion; not applicable toward prior purchases.
• Not valid on Wednesdays or during pay-what-you-wish times (on Wednesdays, basic Limited Admission is already free for everyone).
• The military member must be present with valid ID, and the group must stay together at entry.
• Dependents get the 50% only with an Active Dependent Card when the member is absent — there is no free ticket that way.
• Bronx Zoo Admission (Total Experience) uses flex pricing — the base rate rises on peak dates, so the dollar figures move.
