Gap Military & Veteran Discount
Gap gives military members and their families 10% off in U.S. stores with a valid military ID — there’s no online military code. Here’s how to redeem, and how to save more on gap.com.
Gap offers military service members and their families a 10% discount — but only in Gap stores, and only when you show a valid military ID at the register. Gap Inc.’s own customer service confirms the discount is "currently only available at our stores not online as we need to verify a military ID," so there is no military discount on gap.com and no SheerID/ID.me code for Gap-branded online orders.
That online gap matters: because Gap runs frequent 30–50% off sales, the smartest online move for a service member isn’t hunting a (nonexistent) military code — it’s stacking a public promo with a cashback portal like Rakuten (~2%), and, if you shop Gap brands often, using the Gap Encore rewards card (5 points per $1, plus 20% off your first purchase).
This is an independent guide to help you use the offer. We’re not affiliated with Gap or Gap Inc., and terms and prices can change at any time. Confirm details with a store associate or on the official site before you buy.

WHO QUALIFIES
Gap gives active, retired, and reserve military members and their families 10% off regular-priced items — but only in U.S. Gap stores, by showing a valid military ID at the register. There is no online military discount and no SheerID/ID.me code for gap.com.
- Active-duty U.S. military — eligible in-store with a valid military ID.
- Reserve and National Guard members — Gap Inc. names "reserve US military personnel."
- Retired military — eligible in-store with a valid military ID.
- Veterans — listed as eligible; bring a valid military/veteran ID and confirm in-store that your ID type is accepted.
- Family members and registered dependents — eligible with a valid military ID (the ID-holder generally must be present).
- First responders (police, fire, EMS) are not covered — Gap’s discount is military-only.
| Audience | Discount |
|---|---|
| Military — active duty, reserve, National Guard, retirees, and veterans (in-store)Regular-priced items, per purchase, at U.S. Gap stores. Show a valid military ID at the register. Not valid on gap.com. | 10% off |
| Military family members and registered dependents (in-store)Eligible with a valid military ID; the eligible ID-holder generally must be present. | 10% off |
| Online shoppers at gap.comThere is no online military discount. Stack a public promo code or sale with a cashback portal (e.g. Rakuten, ~2%); Gap’s frequent 30–50% off sales routinely beat 10%. | No military rate |
HOW TO REDEEM
Online at www.gap.com
- There is no online military discount — use a public sale + cashbackGap has no military rate on gap.com and no SheerID/ID.me code. To save online, stack a current public promo code or sale (Gap runs frequent 30–50% off events) with a cashback portal such as Rakuten (~2%). A live sale routinely beats the 10% in-store military rate.
- Consider the Gap Encore rewards card for online ordersNew Gap Encore cardholders get 20% off their first purchase (works online, unlike the military discount), then earn 5 points per $1 (~1% back) at Gap Inc. brands year-round. Issued by Barclays — confirm current terms on Gap’s Encore FAQ.
- Ignore any "Gap online military code" you see advertisedCoupon and aggregator sites advertising a "Gap 10% online military code, verify with SheerID" are wrong for Gap-branded shopping — that pattern belongs to sibling brand Old Navy and to unrelated retailers, not gap.com.
In store
- Shop at a physical U.S. Gap storeThe 10% military discount is available only in Gap stores, not on gap.com. Some stores may not participate — ask before you shop.
- Show your valid military ID at the registerPresent a valid military ID to the store associate at checkout so they can verify your status in person.
- Get 10% off eligible itemsThe associate applies 10% off eligible, regular-priced items on that purchase.
- Take the larger of the discount or the day’s saleThe military discount can’t be combined with other Gap offers, so if the day’s promotion beats 10%, use the sale instead.
HOW IT WORKS
Verification is in person: you show a valid military ID to a Gap store associate at the register. Gap Inc. explicitly ties the in-store-only rule to needing to physically verify that ID. Unlike sibling brand Old Navy (which has used online verification services), Gap-branded online orders have no SheerID/ID.me military flow — so there is no online code to enter at gap.com checkout.
One thing to watch: many coupon and aggregator pages headline a "Gap 10% online military discount, verify with SheerID," and some describe a "10–15%" range. Neither is accurate for Gap-branded shopping. The verified figure is 10%, in-store only; the SheerID "military verification" pages some results surface belong to Old Navy and to Foot Locker, not Gap.
Old Navy, Banana Republic, and Athleta are sibling brands under Gap Inc., each with its own policy — don’t assume Gap’s in-store rule applies to them or vice versa. If Gap ever adds online verification the way Old Navy has, the "in-store only" headline would change; until then, treat any "online Gap military code" as unverified.
Exclusions & fine print
- In-store, U.S. only — the 10% military rate is not valid on gap.com.
- Cannot be combined with other offers or discounts, including the Gap Inc. employee discount.
- Not valid on gift-card purchases, and no price adjustments on previous purchases.
- Whether sale/clearance items qualify (vs. regular-priced only) is reported to vary by store — confirm at checkout.
- Some Gap stores may not participate, and the discount is generally non-transferable — the eligible ID-holder typically must make the purchase.
