HOW IT WORKS
Verification is a simple in-person ID check at the counter — a military status ID, or an Illinois State ID with Gold Star Family status. Because it’s an in-person benefit, it cannot be applied to a pre-purchased online ticket, so active-duty members and veterans should redeem at the counter rather than buying military tickets online. There is no ID.me, GovX, or SheerID gate for a museum admission.
The benefits stack up well for families. Year-round, the eligible service member or veteran gets free general admission, and up to six family members get a discounted rate. In summer, the Field Museum’s participation in the National Endowment for the Arts’ Blue Star Museums program gets the active-duty member plus up to five family members in free from May 16 through September 7, 2026 — for that, bring a DoD-issued ID such as a CAC or DD Form 1173.
One thing to note: "free general admission" covers the base ticket, but special exhibitions and All-Access packages may still carry a fee unless the day’s offer says otherwise. Illinois residents also have separate free-resident days that any resident can use, which is a handy alternative for non-eligible companions. The cheapest path for an active-duty family is a summer visit under Blue Star Museums; outside summer, the service member or veteran is free and family members pay the discounted rate.
