SEAMAN APPRENTICE (SA) — U.S. NAVY E-2
The Navy's second-tier enlisted paygrade — apprentice Sailors of all general apprenticeships.
OVERVIEW
Seaman Apprentice (SA) is the U.S. Navy E-2 enlisted paygrade. The "Seaman Apprentice" title is the most common variant; the Navy uses several community-specific apprentice titles at E-2 depending on the Sailor's general apprenticeship: Seaman Apprentice (SA, deck and admin), Fireman Apprentice (FA, engineering), Airman Apprentice (AN to AA — aviation), Constructionman Apprentice (CA, Seabees), and Hospitalman Apprentice (HA, hospital corps). All five share paygrade E-2 and the same two-stripe insignia.
Most Seaman Apprentices promote to Seaman (E-3) after approximately nine months of additional satisfactory service.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Continue developing rating-specific technical skills
- Stand entry-level shipboard or shore watches
- Work toward "striker" qualification in the chosen rating
HISTORY
The Navy formalized its general-apprenticeship community structure in the mid-20th century, codifying the distinct apprentice tracks that funnel new Sailors toward the rated specialty (rating) they will eventually hold. Each apprenticeship — Seaman, Fireman, Airman, Constructionman, Hospitalman — corresponds to a broad fleet community and culminates in a specific E-4 rating ("striker") within that community.
The differentiated titles are a uniquely Navy construct that traces back to age-of-sail rating practices, where the Sailor's job title changed depending on whether they worked on deck, below decks, or in a specialty.
