MISSION DOSSIER

Navy Week returns to the Queen City during Cincinnati's famous Zinzinnati Oktoberfest — the largest Oktoberfest in the United States, celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2026. With a record 818,532 attendees in 2025, the festival at Sawyer Point and Yeatman's Cove on the Ohio River provides extraordinary reach for Navy outreach.

The Navy has had five ships named USS Cincinnati, including a Civil War ironclad gunboat that served on the Mississippi and Yazoo rivers where six crew members received the Medal of Honor. The current USS Cincinnati (LCS-20) continues this remarkable naming tradition.

Anchor Event

Zinzinnati Oktoberfest is the largest Oktoberfest celebration in the United States and second largest in the world (after Munich). 2026 marks its golden jubilee (first held 1976). Held at Sawyer Point and Yeatman's Cove on the Ohio River, September 17–20. Record 818,532 attendees in 2025. Features the World's Largest Chicken Dance, Running of the Wieners (dachshund races), Samuel Adams Stein Hoisting Championship, and World Brat Eating Championship. Free admission.

Local Military Context

The Navy has had five ships named USS Cincinnati — a remarkable naming tradition. The most notable was the Civil War ironclad gunboat that served on the Mississippi and Yazoo rivers; sunk during the Siege of Vicksburg (1863), six crew members received the Medal of Honor. The current USS Cincinnati (LCS-20) is an Independence-class littoral combat ship.

Cincinnati's Ohio River location was strategically critical during the Civil War — a staging area for Union forces and a center for building ironclad gunboats. Wright-Patterson Air Force Base (~60 miles northeast in Dayton) is a major USAF installation. Ohio has approximately 730,000 veterans — one of the largest veteran populations in the country.
